Child Support Law Clerk Interns will work directly with staff attorneys, gain experience in family law litigation, and become familiar with child support statutes, regulations and policies. Interns will:
- Prepare moving and responsive pleadings
- Negotiate and draft stipulations
- Provide courtroom support
- Make court appearances
Law Clerk Internships: Law Clerks are considered to be Interns and as such are not in classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation and sick leave; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Further, Law Clerks may not work more than 1,560 hours in a twelve-month period (from date of hire) regardless of whether they are currently enrolled in a full-time or part-time academic program. Internships are limited to a maximum of 36 months for Law Clerks currently enrolled in an academic programs and three years for Graduate Law Clerks.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Completion of the first year of an accredited law school program, or successful completion of the California First Year Law Students Examination and current enrollment in a law school.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary endorsements may be required to perform the essential functions of the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to: analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence and precedents to legal problems; present statements of law, fact and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form; establish and maintain harmonious and cooperative relationships with other staff members, other county staff, and the public; perform legal research and prepare legal opinions; evaluate complaints and obtain information through personal interviews.
Knowledge of: the principles of civil and criminal law and the methods and practices of pleading; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; legal research methods and how to prepare briefs and opinions.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
An Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal (pass/not pass) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's combination of educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position to ensure satisfaction of the minimum qualifications for this position. Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications for the position will be placed on an extra-help employment list and referred to the department. The department may contact candidates from the employment list who possess the most appropriate job-related qualifications for further consideration.
If selected, students will be asked to provide proof of student status and course of study.
A background investigation is required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation. Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy. Reference information will not be made available to applicants.
Additional requirements, such as successful completion of a physical exam, drug screen, etc., may apply, depending on the duties and responsibilities of the position.
